⏺︎ LECCE The tour starts with cycling through the narrow alleys of Lecce old town. • 15 minutes • ⏺︎ STERNATIA You will cycle for one hour (18 km), surrounded by ancient olive tree plantations and beautiful Masserias (traditional farmhouses), until you arrive at the town of Sternatia. Sternatia is one of the 11 towns that form an area called Grecia Salentina, inhabited by the Griko people, an ethnic Greek minority in southern Italy who speak Griko, a Greek variant. The Greeks have been settling in Southern Italy since prehistoric times, up to the Byzantine era. In Sternatia, you will: - Visit a 15th-century olive oil mill - Explore Palace Granafei and the main church of Sternatia - Visit an olive oil producer (Olive Oil Tasting) - Enjoy a bar break with a traditional Leccese coffee and Pasticciotto (local pastry) • 1 hour • ⏺︎ FRANTOIO IPOGEO With a local guide from Sternatia, visit an ancient underground olive oil mill from the 15th century, carved into the soft limestone rock. Like many mills in the region, this one was historically used for producing lamp oil, which was exported across Europe, illuminating major cities like London and Amsterdam. With the rise of gas lighting in the 19th century, the demand for lamp oil declined. Following this, you will visit a modern olive oil producer, where you will have the chance to taste locally produced extra virgin olive oil. • 45 minutes • ⏺︎ CHIESA PARROCCHIALE DI MARIA SANTISSIMA ASSUNTA This Baroque-style church, built in the 18th century, stands as a remarkable example of architectural and ecclesiastical heritage in the heart of Sternatia.
